Founded in 1945 by Pierre Balmain, from the outset, the designer’s boldly feminine and opulent signature style offered a startling contrast to the utilitarian looks of the day.

 

Monsieur Balmain created a distinctive, super-feminine DNA for the house, which focused on richly embroidered fabrics, nipped-in waists and longer, often fuller skirts—promptly transforming the Parisian house into a favorite of both European and Hollywood royalty. Of course, the beauty and spirit of Paris have inspired countless creators over the centuries—but Balmain manages to stand apart due to a distinct emphasis on the French Capital’s exceptionally open and inclusive character.

In 2011 and at just 25 years old, Olivier Rousteing was named Balmain’s Creative Director, and the maison’s rich couture has been celebrated in each of his collections since. Balmain’s archives impress and inspire, while its atelier, with its mastery of intricate couture techniques, continue to awe.
